One can safely say that Immolation have never released a bad album, and Atonement is easily an immediate ass-kicker, and sure to be one of 2017's best death metal albums. Immolation "Atonement" Nuclear Blast Records Although Florida, is generally regarded as the immortal epicentre of American Death Metal (and rightly so, it is the home of Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide among many others after all), New York is also right up there in producing so many quality death… One of Immolation’s best attributes is the dark, sinister undercurrent that runs through each of their albums, and it’s pleasing to say that Atonement is no different. Sometimes it’s just the way Robert Vigna constructs his distinctive, disharmonic riffs, other times it’s the overall tone of the song itself.

Hauntingly rich, of course dark and a milestone that everyone should experience, Atonement , will leave you devastated and thirsty for more. The proliferation of “weird” death metal bands owe a significant debt of gratitude to New York’s Immolation. Since their 1991 Dawn of Possession debut and 1996 Here in After follow-up, Immolation has managed to become their own separate, if not disparate entity, at times, difficult to listen to, others, a bit more captivating than originally thought.
